History of Covington Christian School
Covington Christian School, originally known as Covington First Baptist School,
was established in 1979 under the leadership of Pastor Gregg Curtis of Covington First Baptist Church.
Early Years (1979-1986)
  • The school began with 16 students in K4 and K5.
  • By 1980, grades 1-3 were added, and enrollment grew to 27 students.
  • The school continued to expand, offering grades K4 through 8th by 1985, with 89 students enrolled.
Growth and Development (1987-1997)
  • The school introduced sports teams, including soccer, basketball, and cheerleading.
  • Leadership changes occurred, with Dr. Gregg Curtis and Pastor Glenn Ray Jr. resigning in 1988.
  • By 1992, Warren Allen became the Administrator, and the school offered K4-6th grades.
Expansion and Rebranding (1998-2004)
  • Judy Rennaker became Principal in 1998, and Dr. Joe Davis served as Pastor/Administrator until 2002.
  • The school became a separate corporation from the church and was renamed Covington Christian School in 2000.
  • Plans to build a new school were discontinued due to funding issues.
High School Years (2005-2013)
  • The first senior class graduated in 2006, and the school offered K3 through 12th grade.
  • Sports programs and extracurricular activities like drama club and choir were available.
  • In 2011, the school became accredited and started accepting state vouchers and scholarships.
Leadership Changes (2013-2023)
  • High school grades were discontinued in 2013 due to low enrollment.
  • The school continued to offer K3 through 8th grade, with improvements in preschool and elementary enrollment.
  • Leadership changes occurred, with Justin Wilderman serving as Administrator/Principal until he resigned in 2023.
New Beginnings (2023-Present)
  • Currently, the school offers preschool to second grade, with plans to add to 4th grade in the 2025-26 school term.
  • Pastor Andy Harkleroad, the Pastor of the First Baptist Church is serving as the Interim School Administrator.
